Reading style.

I remember being a little surprised when my friend Al mentioned that he hadn’t finished a book in ages. I’ve always been one of those people who felt the need to plug through from beginning to end. Like when I go to the movies,move always felt that if you paid the cash,and started the work, you need to finish it off!

It doesn’t seem to work that way anymore

Below is my kindle list of 15 books that I’ve currently got on the go. That might be a weeks worth of reading for my sister, but it’s a lot more for me.

If only you could swap sleep for reading.

Good Friends

Jermiah
My friend Dan, totally out of the blue, gave me a page of a really old bible, with a hand coloured illustration on it. I got it framed.

It’s of Jeremiah being lowered down a well because he prophesied that Jerusalem was going to fall into the hands of the Babylonians. A perfect reminder that sometimes doing the right thing can have bad consequences, but in the end, God is in control!

And it’ll look cool on the wall…

Kippling

It’s been a while since I posted a poem. I think this is a very good one! An exposition of Manhood could just as easily be read as one of Christian virtue.

“If” by Rudyard Kippling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream–and not make dreams your master,
If you can think–and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings–nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And–which is more–you’ll be a Man, my son!

Happy Anniversary

5 years…

4 houses and soon to be 4 kids.

3 different jobs I’ve held over that time.

Just the two of us.

In one marriage.

We went to Le Chat Noir for lunch (thanks to the Fryirs’ for babysitting) and they surprised us with the lovely profiteroles above!
Would you believe that after polishing them off, I still had room for the dessert below? Of course you would! Anyway, chocolate liqueur brûlée is hard to beat, but put in a biscuit called a “cats tongue” and I’ll always be in. I’d love to see a chef arrange that with a cat!

Whatever

I know, I know, you’ve heard it all before.

But I have been pretty disciplined when it comes to some other pieces of online communication, and the realisation that I have my own kindle page, where I can get access to all the notes & highlights of the books I have been reading, has enthused me, so I think I’ll hop back on the wagon.

So where are things at?
The wife is 2/3 of the way through her pregnancy. Things are going well, but we’re all looking forward to the arrival of the twins (we’ll probably take that back after a couple of sleepless weeks).
Work is fab. Kincumber is an awesome parish, I’m starting to lay down some roots, sort out some rhythms, and actually be worth something to the parish (though maybe you have to ask them?). I’m particularly enjoying being able to do things like Saturday morning Bible, Prayer and Surf, with a couple of guys from the parish. Winter weather hasn’t slowed us down yet.

And how are the Kids?
Pumpkin & Gumnut are doing well. The later has no real comprehension that he is about to become a big brother twice over, but his sister is pretty excited about the “twinnies.” Here’s an obligatory picture.
Pumpkin & Gumnut

So, again, encouraged by my sister who has upped her blogging stats, we’ll see if I keep on going.
